Thematic Area
Rainwater Management (RWM)
Rainwater Management (RWM) is the
unique selling point (USP) of our organization, offering a low-cost yet highly
effective intervention for soil and water conservation. A team of
experts consisting of experienced retired Civil engineers, a horticulturist,
and an agronomist provided their valuable guidance at the time of feasibility
assessment, planning, and execution. Groundwater recharge in the catchment area
involves implementing measures such as the construction of primary bunds,
secondary bunds, sub-surface dykes, gully control structures, and LBCDs to
prevent soil erosion, promote water infiltration, retain moisture, and enhance
surface water levels in targeted areas. Remarkable results were observed in the
villages of Raldipanka and Padmapur in Mohana block, where the initiative began
in 2013-14 with support from NFI. Over the past 10–12 years, these villages
have not experienced drought, even many of the rest of the block suffered, proving the sustainability and
community impact of the RWM approach.
Agriculture and Climate Resilience
Agriculture and climate resilience are strengthened through the use of climate-adaptive seeds, organic inputs, and sustainable practices that improve soil fertility and boost production. By promoting organic composting, bio-fertilisers, and pest control alternatives, farmers enhance soil health and reduce dependency on chemicals. These interventions not only increase productivity but also build resilience against erratic weather, ensuring long-term food security and environmental sustainability in vulnerable farming communities.
Sustainable Livelihoods for landless and vulnerable households
Addressing the SDG specified by the UN our organization has given utmost priority to the vulnerable and landless families. Sustainable livelihoods for landless and vulnerable families are promoted through alternative income-generating activities such as goat rearing, poultry rearing, and skill enhancement opportunities. These low-investment, high-return ventures provide steady income and nutritional support, especially for women and marginalized groups. Capacity-building training, veterinary support, and market linkages ensure sustainability and economic resilience. Additionally, tailoring, mushroom cultivation, and other vocational skills are introduced to diversify income sources, empowering households to achieve self-reliance and improve their overall quality of life.
Strengthening CSOs
As part of SACAL’s interventions to strengthen Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) at the village level, efforts are made to actively engage communities in Palli Sabha and Gram Sabha processes. Through the sensitization and capacity building of Village Development Committees (VDCs) and Panchayat Development Committees (PDCs), SACAL empowers local institutions to access government schemes and entitlements, identify eligible beneficiaries, and participate in village-level planning and decision-making. This inclusive approach enhances transparency, accountability, and community ownership in the village development process.
Health and Nutrition:
Health and Nutrition – From 2006 to 2011, with support from SDTT and the Health Department of Odisha, SACAL implemented impactful interventions to promote nutritious diets and combat malnutrition in tribal regions. Community education programs raised awareness on balanced diets, while Nutri-gardens were established at household and school levels to ensure access to fresh vegetables and fruits. Emphasis was placed on utilizing locally available, nutrient-rich foods. These efforts significantly improved dietary diversity, reduced anemia among women and children, and fostered healthy eating habits across targeted communities. Currently, initiatives focusing on nutrition and gender perspective development have been actively launched in three Gram Panchayats of Mohana Block, aiming to promote inclusive health, empower women, and improve overall well-being through community awareness, capacity building, and integrated development approaches.
Empowerment and Skills for Women
With the support of NABARD, CELCO Foundation, and SDTT, SACAL has advanced gender equity by empowering women through leadership training, skill development, and financial literacy. Income-generating opportunities were strengthened by building capacities in tailoring, food processing, and livestock rearing. Financial inclusion was promoted by linking women with credit and savings through self-help groups (SHGs), enabling them to manage household finances effectively. These initiatives enhanced SHG networks, improved livelihoods, and encouraged women’s meaningful participation in community-level decision-making.
